Teaching BrightSign Your Signs
Learn how to teach BrightSign your signs
Adding a Sign
To add a new sign to a library, first go into the sign library menu by tapping the book icon in the top left hand corner of the home screen. Then tap on the name of the library that you want to add a sign to.
Once you are on that library’s page, click on the “Add a Sign” button at the bottom of the list of existing signs within that library, or press on the + icon to the right of the library’s name.
You’ll then be presented with options for the different types of sign you might want to create. Select one to continue.
Generate Speech Signs
Generate Speech signs are the classic kind of sign that BrightSign uses. When you perform the sign, your selected voice is used to generate speech corresponding to the label of the sign.
To create a Generate Speech sign, tap the corresponding option.
You’ll be asked to enter the label corresponding to the sign. This is the text that will be generated as speech when you perform the sign.
You can even include emojis in this text!
You will also need to select the language of the text that you have just entered. This should generally be the same language as the voice that you have selected for output, in order to minimise any risk of mispronunciation.
When you are done, press the “Add Sign” button to finish.
Audio Signs
Audio signs are signs that play a recorded audio file when you perform the sign. This could be used to play back some recorded speech, a sound effect or even a piece of music.
To create an Audio sign, tap the corresponding option.
You’ll be asked to enter the label corresponding to the sign. This is shown in the list of signs as well as in the conversation sheet when the sign is performed later.
For an audio sign, you’ll need to record the audio that you want us to play back. To record it, press and hold the microphone icon in the audio section and then say or play whatever sound you want. Release the microphone icon as soon as you have finished recording.
You can press the “Play” icon to listen to the recording to check it, or the “Trash” icon to delete it and try again.
When you are done, press the “Add Sign” button to finish.
Webhook Signs
Webhook signs are a new kind of sign that can be used by more technical customers to allow BrightSign to interact with other systems. When the sign is performed, our app will make a request to a URL endpoint that you specify.
If you aren’t sure what a webhook is, don’t worry - this feature probably isn’t of interest to you.
To create a Webhook sign, tap the corresponding option.
You’ll be asked to enter the label corresponding to the sign. This is shown in the list of signs as well as in the conversation sheet when the sign is performed later.
You will also have to enter the URL of the webhook endpoint that you would like us to call.
Please note that your smart device must have network access to the URL that you specify whenever signing in order to make the request. While the app will attempt to make the request when the sign is performed, we do not make a strong guarantee that the request will be successful.
When you are done, press the “Add Sign” button to finish.
Recording an example of a sign
To record an example for a sign, first navigate to that sign’s page, by going into the sign library menu by tapping the book icon in the top left hand corner of the home screen and tapping on the name of the library that the sign is in. Next, find the sign in the list of signs within that library and tap on it.
To add the example, press the “Add Example” button. Following the instructions on the screen, press the button to start recording, perform your sign once and then press stop. You’ll then be asked to either confirm the new recorded example, or to try again.
